How To Use Essential Oils Safely
I recently came across an article by New Beauty bringing awareness to the possibility of burns with essential oils. In the article, a woman had suffered second and third degree burns from essential oils. She had applied the oils before a yoga class and used a tanning bed after the class. The next day she applied the essential oils on her neck and wrists and her skin started to blister indicating a chemical burn. Reading this article prompted me to write about how essential oils should be used safely. Here are some tips.
Always Dilute
It’s always best to dilute the essential oils with carrier oil prior to application. Almond oil, coconut oil and odorless fractionated coconut oils are great carrier oils. Use a few drops to a teaspoon of carrier oil. Lavender oils is an oil that is typically ok to be used as neat (without a carrier oil) but use caution when applying.
Avoid Sun With Citrus Oils
Citrus essential oils can cause the skin to burn more easily in the sun so use with caution if you are planning for a day at the beach or pool.
Follow Recommended Usage Guidelines
Doterra has issued guidelines for essential oil usage for per time and within 24 hour period. Always check with your physician if you have health concerns or any questions about how essential oils can affect your body. Everyone’s body is different and metabolizes things differently so it’s always best to use caution and and discuss with your doctor.
